MARTIN LUTHER

Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany in 1483. He attended schools in Mansfield, Magdeburg and Eisenach. At the age of 17 Luther went to university and graduated with a Masters Degree in philosophy. His father's wish was to see his son become a lawyer. After few months of studying law he went through a spiritual experience that made him quit school and join the monastery instead.

REFORMATION

Luther was ordained as a priest in 1507 and a year later started lecturing theology at the university in Wittenberg. He received a PhD in theology in 1512. During that time words "repentance" and "justice" acquired a new meaning for him. He realized that the church has lost its central and most important truth - salvation through faith. These new convictions forced him to start a discussion by nailing his famous 95 theses to the doors of a church in Wittenberg. Some of his theses were critical to the church's practices and doctrines. Historians agree that this act started the reformation. The printing press contributed to widespread of Luther's views across Germany and Europe just a few months after they were publicly declared.

STATEMENT

The Church's representatives demanded him to recall his statement. He appeared, as ordered, before the Diet of Worms in 1521, and gave his famous response: " [...] my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. Amen." Luther was released and spent his next year in Wartburg, working on a German translation of the New Testament. Translating the Hebrew writings took the next couple of years to complete. The complete translation of the Bible was printed in 1534. Martin Luther will always be remembered as a person who translated the Bible to a national language and as the monk who started the reformation.
